R7 has 4K video recording, no recording limits, and much better low light performance. The buffer is much larger on the R7 as well. I think the R7 is worth the extra 300 USD, but the grip issue is really a deal breaker. If you need a grip and are on a budget, the 90D is still a great camera, and you could put that extra 300 USD towards lenses. If you can deal with the grip, the R7 is the clear winner in every other aspect. Vs 7DmkII – I mention the 7DmkII here mainly because of expectation that the R7 was going to essentially replace it. The R7 is priced the same at 1500 USD, which is 500 USD less than the 7D II at its launch in 2014. The 7D II is still a fantastic camera, but the R7 just outclasses it in virtually every way. The 7D II has better build quality and a better grip. It does have a slightly larger buffer for RAW, but the R7 outdoes it with burst rates and focus tracking. The 7D II shutter is quieter, though the EVF and AF clearly favor the R7. The R7 is about the same size (just a bit smaller) and weight, has much better video. The 7D II is 6 years old at this point, and if you still have one I’d say it’s about time for an upgrade to the R7. If the R7 had the grip and Canon offered a true 7D mkII successor, I’d say that go with with the 7D II. But without these the R7 is clearly the better choice. R7 is basically the next logical step for anyone using a 7D II that wants a crop body and can afford the 1500 USD price point.
